After teaching middle and high school band for 29 years, I became a full time band clinician and consultant in the San Antonio, Houston, Austin, and Dallas areas. I have been consistently teaching flute lessons for about 35 years in the San Antonio area.

During my visits to both middle and high school band programs, many band directors shared their frustrations with me regarding teaching beginner flute students. Three of the main concerns from the directors were:

1. Students had trouble recognizing the best spot on the head joint for making a sound.
2. Students had a difficult time consistently finding the "sweet spot" with muscle memory.
3. Flute students struggled with maintaining proper hand position and playing notes once the flute was put together.
